Osprey Story

Squatters

On a trip along Lake Isle AB recently, we spotted an osprey flying over a nest that I had taken shots of last summer (2015). We were surprised to see the osprey as it was early in the season, April 20. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with the zoom along, so we didn't stop for a pic. One week later, April 27, we decided to investigate to see if the Osprey was nesting. Sure enough, there was a head sticking out of the deep nest.

Can you guess what it is? My husband, Harry, maintained it was an osprey due to the white stripe. I noticed the bill and knew right away it was a Canada Goose that had helped herself to the osprey nest. We traveled on to the next osprey nest I had also captured last year. It was in sight of Highway 16, Seba Beach overpass, on top of an old telephone pole. This is what we found there.

Across the road we heard some shrieking and then spotted an osprey circling the area, clearly displeased at our presence, or so we thought. It is not until I uploaded the images on my computer, that I found out this nest was also occupied by a Canada Goose! We have never witnessed that before.

We will be visiting these osprey nests frequently to see what develops. Will the ospreys get their nests back from the squatting Canada Geese?
